QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Here are some answers to the most commonly
asked questions.

WHEN DID CONSTRUCTION OF THE
MOVING WALL BEGIN?
The original wall panels were photographs
mounted on masonite panels. These panels were
attached to sixteen (16) 2x4's and plywood
frames, sixteen (16) feet long. This wall was built
in 1983. In anticipation of new aluminum panels,
an aluminum frame was designed and built in
1994. This aluminum frame, folds in half and fits
in a small trailer. The wall now could be

assembled and taken down in less than an hour. In
1995, the photographic panels were replaced with
aluminum panels. The names are laser etched by
computer on the panels, which are painted with a
black powder coating and baked to a mirror finish.
Name rubbings can now be made from these
panels.

WHEN WAS THE MOVING WALL
COMPLETED?
The new Moving Wall was completed in May
1995. In May, the last panel was laser etched and
mounted to its frame and loaded into the trailer.
On Memorial Day, 1995, The new Moving Wall
was erected and displayed for the first time in
Streamwood, Illinois.

WHO PAID FOR THE MOVING WALL?

The Moving Wall was paid for, like the Vietnam
Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., from
contributions made by the public.

WHAT ARE THE DIMENSIONS OF THE
MOVING WALL?

overall length of the Moving Wall is 236.25 feet,
composed of 70 separate [sic] frames, each frame
containing two laser etched panels; each of the
two walls that make up the entire Wall are
118.125 feet in length, which is slightly less than
half the length of the Memorial in Washington,
D.C., where each wall is 246.75 feet, overall
length being 493.5 feet. The tallest panels have
